Our first visit was at the orphanage of Croix Glorieuse. We spent some times with the orphans and donated some items there (see Thank you letter below). There are 70 girls there from 7 months to 18 years of age (See Croix Glorieuse pic below). Sister Dorval Ectane is the founder of the work of the Croix Glorieuse Orphanage since the academic year 1996. She, with the help of the other sisters, has been constantly working to benefit the poorest children, and children sometimes abandoned by their own parents. They said that the resources of the orphanage are very low and it has become increasingly difficult. They asked that we help them find food, sanitary items, supplies and classic kitchen kit; that would facilitate the task and help them assist many more underprivileged children (see letter of solicitation below). We visited most of the tent cities in and outside of Port-au-Prince.  Most of them are in poor conditions.  Even the well-organized tent cities are facing daily difficulties.  For example, at Crorail camp, the residents there have access to water, portable toilet, and raw food.  However, they do not have a kitchen and kitchen appliances to cook their food (see video clip). On June 8, it was raining, one the tents’ occupants had no choice but to cook inside the tent.  The tent was caught on fire in a matter of second. In addition, the children are anxious to go to school (see video clip) and need some form of entertainment.   The hurricane season officially began last month and we need to act very quickly before another disaster occurs.

At Chancerelle, Hospital, we distributed baby blankets, bed sheets, baby clothes, diapers, gloves, hydrogen peroxide and pain killers at the maternity ward.  The patients were very happy, but they asked that we help them get a safer and a cleaner environment.   This hospital is in need of all kinds of supplies such as ventilation, cribs, baby bassinets, chairs for the patients to sit down, bed sheets, blankets, pain killers, iron pills, gloves, dioxide, and diapers etc. We witnessed the mothers sleeping along with their newborn babies in twin size beds.  Those who were in labor could not get admitted because of lack of space

We wanted to take pictures or video clips of everyone while donating the items and it was impossible. A few of them were willing to say “Thank you” on camera and most of them were camera shy. We were also running out of time. Somehow we managed to get some clips.

The people of Haiti are suffering from a disaster on unthinkable proportions, and we must do all we can to help them recover in the weeks, months, and years ahead. Despite the local and international efforts, hungry children are still living in tent cities, countless people have no alternative but to sleep beneath bed sheets strung on poles as makeshift tents. Those families lack sanitation, food and privacy.
